As told by #1 Arron Goodin:
Saturday, February 9 marked the inaugural
play of the San Diego Adult Baseball LeagueGolf Tournament. The
tournament was played at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in the hills south of
Escondido. The question on everyone's mind on Sunday was simply, how
would the division winning San Diego Reds do against the competition. To
represent the team, the Reds sent Al McCoy, Jeff Wallace, Paul Elliot
and Arron Goodin to the tourney. Just as the dew was disappearing from
the practice fairway Wallace stepped to the tee and warmed up as Goodin
stretched and contemplated the scorecard. Soon after the two met up with
McCoy and Elliot on the putting green to get a feel for the greens. The
weather was perfect and the day looked promising until the horn sounded
for the teams to take their carts to their tees and begin play. When
Jeff Wallace took the first shot for the Reds he was greeted with wind
gusts strong enough to knock him off the tee box. And so was the rest of
the team. And the front nine was just that winds blowing the carts,
balls, scorecards, players and whatever else was not rooted into the
ground. Even then that did not keep you safe at times. One cart was
mauled by a psychotic tree trunk sized limb falling from a tree near a
cart path. After shooting a two over front nine the Reds looked to get
some strokes back and try to finish under par as the goal of winning was
crushed by Team Botke shooting a ten under par on the front nine. Great
putts by Jeff Wallace and Paul Elliot along with some long drives from
Al McCoy and Arron Goodin. One of McCoys drives was good enough to earn
longest drive of the tournament and win himself a brand new Easton bat.
Al has decided to donate the bat to the team. All and all the Reds
finished the tournament 1 under after a fabulous back nine. The team had
a great time and looks forward to playing next winter in the second
tournament. Oh and that Team Botke (The controversial team with no
baseball players on it.) won the tourney with a 15 under score.
